Homily For the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rev. Gerald Dalseth
February 5, 2012

You have just heard Bishop Kinney’s annual appeal for the critical needs of our
diocese.  I hope you will be generous to that letter that you and I received in the mail this
last week.

I think the annual appeal allows us to stretch our concerns beyond the borders of
our parish and look at the broader Catholic Church to which we belong.  There are so
many things we cannot do as a parish that can only be done on a broader scale.  Let me
give you a few examples.  What parish could run an adoption agency by itself?  What
parish could have the resources to hire professional counselors?  What parish has
provided housing on a large scale for the needy?  These are just a few examples of what
needs to be done on a Diocesan level that an individual parish cannot do.

How grateful we are to be members of that broader Church that we call the Diocese
of St. Cloud.  I pray that you will heed our bishop’s kind request for our Annual Diocesan
Appeal.
